I bought my first packraft in late 2013 and it proved almost impossible to find anyone else to on on trips with. I bought a second packraft to drag mates out, then set up a Facebook group to try and find more people, and finally, announced to the packrafting community that I’d host the first official packrafting meet-up in New Zealand.
My initially selfish bid to find more packrafting friends was a success! In early January 2016, 30 packrafters from around the world descended on Murchison for New Zealand’s inaugural packrafting meet-up:
Flooded rivers around Murchison provided some excitement during the weekend and there were many opportunities for people to geek out with other packraft enthusiasts. After the event some people headed back to work while others dispersed around the South Island and went on personal packrafting adventures with new friends. The Landsborough and Clarence Rivers were popular and we introduced some Americans to a true kiwi bush-bashing experience!
Stay tuned for the next meet-up in New Zealand. It’s likely to be sometime in 2017 or early 2018, depending on my schedule (or if someone else decides to organise another one earlier!) If you are interested in coming along, subscribe to updates here: Packrafting meet-up New Zealand
Thanks to everyone who helped out with the weekend. Hope to see you on a river again somewhere, sometime!
